Obama defends war at Nobel award


President Barack Obama has said the US must uphold moral standards when waging wars that are necessary and justified, as he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize.
In his speech in Oslo, he defended the US role in Afghanistan, arguing the use of force could bring lasting peace.
He also said his accomplishments were slight compared with other laureates.
Eid al-Adha and the Hajj, 2009

Eid al-Adha, the Muslim "Festival of Sacrifice", commemorating the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son to God. Muslims around the world will celebrate by slaughtering animals to commemorate God's gift of a ram to substitute for Abraham's son, distributing the meat amongst family, friends and the poor. US-Iranian journalist Saberi makes first public appearance

Roxana Saberi, the US-Iranian journalist who was sentenced in Iran to eight years in prison on spying charges but was released on Monday, thanked those who helped secure her release in her first interaction with reporters on Tuesday.
US-born reporter Roxana Saberi, who was freed from an Iranian jail, said on Tuesday she has no immediate plans for the future and for now merely wants to "relax" with her family.
Call to restrict 'college' label

UK college organisations are urging Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to restrict firms' use of "college". At present, there are controls over which organisations can say they are a "university", but not for colleges. The UK Council of Colleges says the lack of control means that bogus colleges are causing "real damage". Bogus colleges have recently faced a clampdown from tougher immigration laws, which have been introduced to stop the misuse of the student visa system.
Pope condemns denial of Holocaust

Pope Benedict XVI has said the suffering of Holocaust victims must never be denied as he visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. "May the names of these victims never perish. May their suffering never be denied, belittled or forgotten," he said in the midst of survivors. The pontiff began his trip to the Holy Land by saying in Tel Aviv that anti-Semitism was totally unacceptable. He also voiced support for the Palestinians' right to a homeland.
Pope calls on Mideast Christians to work for regional peace

On a visit to the site of Christ's baptism, Pope Benedict XVI called on the Middle East's Christian community to work for peace in the region. Earlier in the day the pope held mass before some 30,000 people at an open-air stadium in Amman. Pope Benedict XVI Sunday hailed the courage of Holy Land Christians and urged them to work to counter violence in a region long devastated by conflict that has forced many thousands to flee.
Reporter Saberi leaves Iran jail

The US-Iranian journalist jailed in Iran, Roxana Saberi, has been freed from prison after having her sentence for spying reduced. Lawyers for Ms Saberi, 31, whose imprisoning sparked a global outcry, said she left Tehran's Evin jail hours after her eight-year term was cut. She will be able to leave the country but has been banned from working as a journalist in Iran for five years.
UN urges Iraq to halt executions

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) have expressed their concern over the resumption of the use of the death penalty in Iraq.“In the wake of this weekend’s executions of a dozen convicted criminals in Iraq, the United Nations urged the Government to stop the use of the death penalty, at least until fair trials can be guaranteed,” according to a statement published on the web site of the UN News Centre.

Around 500 children have died in Iraq throughout the past year as a result of armed operations, the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights revealed on Sunday.
